Innocent until proven guilty

It's quite wrong that the media should name and shame suspects in criminal cases before there is sufficient incriminating evidence. An Englishman in Portugal is complaining that his life has been ruined because of the insinuations relating to the disappearance of that poor child Maddy. I seem to remember that a supermarket worker was subjected to the same vitriol when he was wrongly implicated in the prostitute murders in Ipswich. There is no adequate compensation for being misfired to infamy by the tabloids.

I'm glad you have posted this, WW as I've been watching the Sky coverage and they have all but destroyed him - and he hasn't been charged yet. They must know that they would not be allowed to behave in this way if the suspect were in the UK and they made a hypocritical u-turn late last night. I of course have no sympathy whatever for the person or persons who has / have done this terrible deed but this media circus is now out of hand.

I totally and utterly agree - this nonsense needs to be brought to a halt, and I have been emailing the editors of the BBC to complain about this. I think they are starting to take note of the wider clamour about this - especially following Matthew Parris making an excellent intervention on Radio 4's PM news programme.

Having just watched the Ten O'clock news on BBC News 24, the fact that Mr Parris spoke [albeit briefly] there shows that maybe they are starting to get the message.

Have a squiz at the BBC Editor's Blog, where Kevin Bakhurst is getting some 'feedback' on this important issue.
