Sovereign Islamic bonds

The fact that this Government is determined to launch a sovereign Islamic bond is a testament to its desperation for funds (any funds) and its inability to promote multi-culturalism and religious tolerance whilst simultaneously giving preference to the historic beliefs of this country. To issue debt instruments, in whose principles this Government has no belief and to call them "sovereign", as if to stamp them with some validity, is utterly shameless. You can just see what the worst case could be: an Islamic bank borrows the bonds from the UK Government, lends the money to a group of fanaticists who then use it to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

This post is so badly written that I have no idea what you are going on about.

I particularly have no idea what you are insinuating in the last sentence - are you suggesting that if a UK bank were to lend money to people who then decided to become terrorists, that the British bank are in some way to blame ??

And what on earth has the Islamic faith and finance got to do with it ?

Terrorists come in all shapes and sizes and of all colours and creeds - and banks of all nationalities operating in this country are bound by anti-money laundering regulations and the like.

Perhaps you would care to re-write this post slightly more cogently with shorter sentences and without ranting, so we can see what your argument really is - gobbledygook doesn't really get your point across.

Salut ED

Apologies for the brief, badly written rant, Anon. When I said that the Govt was entering into something in which it didn't believe, I wasn't referring to the Islamic faith but rather loans without interest. If they want to start issuing non-interest bearing loans, perhaps they should think about 50 year non-interest bearing mortgages for first-time buyers and start another sub-prime cycle?

Why should preference be given to the history beliefs of this country?

Hi Dave - if preference is not given to the historic beliefs of this country we undermine our institutions eg the C of E, the monarchy, the House of Lords, the system of justice and freedom of speech. Labour and the BBC may be in favour of this. I am not.

ww-they are so so desperate for money that this is their only chance to get their hands on the money they need to get through the next 12 months. It's also trying to undo the damage GB did with his " Shalom Israel" speech.

Sorry, WW, I think you are an intelligent woman - but this is just twaddle. I am all in favour of keeping these institutions where they are benefiting the country, and not just tinkering with them for the sake of it. The House of Lords is a case in point.

And the monarchy is far better than the alternative of President Blair - but to try and pretend that the Labour Party and BBC are in favour of abolishing the monarchy, or have a policy about disestablishing the Church of England is just nonsense on stilts, and that is being polite.

You can do better than this WW, and frequently do. You are just in danger of sounding like an old fart who reads the Torygraph [which I know you don't] and rants on about 'wasn't like that in my day'. It also makes you sound like an old codger, which we know you aren't.

Bee-haaave, as Austin Powers might say...and please come up with some of the cogent arguments, sparkling wit and wisdom you normally come up with.

Failing that, I personally would settle for you giving that old witch Cherie Blair a good kicking.

Now that is one target which fully justifies a short-tempered rant..
