Conservatives go nationalist

George Osborne said yesterday that banks should be forced to curb pay and bonuses as a quid pro quo for any taxpayer-funded recapitalisation. This is a disappointing knee-jerk reaction from the Shadow Chancellor. It's all very well for the Government to call the shots at Northern Rock or if they are the majority shareholder of any bank but until that happens, such emotional comments are unworthy of a Shadow Chancellor. It's a shame Cameron didn't have the courage to switch Osborne and Hague months ago.

Hi Ellee - well that would be an interesting job.
Hi Anon - my only interest is in hearing a coherent economic opposition policy

So this is not your manifesto for running for Parliament then ?

No problem, I'm sure you will soon get the tap on the shoulder 'Baroness Winchester'..

I do feel in the dark here, WW, but surely the era of bonkers pay packets on the back of gambling on the stock exchange has to come to an end? No?

Hi Anon - it would be hard to be selected if one were not a Cameroon. Peerages may be easier to come by - do you think Mandy will have to forego his if he's sacked for a third time?

Hi Mopsa - yes, some bankers are/have been "overpaid" but at this stage of the banking crisis, pay is a minor issue. I think GO should have referred to "incentives" rather than "pay".

And why are you not a 'Cameroon' ?

Politics is the 'art of the possible' and you are going to have to sell out to compromise politics sooner or later, so why not start now ?

By the way, shouldn't the post read 'Conservatives go statist' ? Surely they gave up being Welsh, Scottish or English nationalist a long time ago ?
