I left England debating whether it was a secular society, following an article in The Church Times by David Cameron. In France, I was interested to find that Bordeaux Cathedral closes for lunch. Would that decision be made by la Cathedrale or by l'Etat?

I have my suspicions about l'Etat considering the iconoclasm of the end of the 18th cent to say nothing of the banning of religion in favour of 'reason'.
If ever you com to live in the SW you'll find that lunch transcends both.
Imagine my surprise to find that the saintly Mr. Terry Wogan has written about the same issue in this mornings Daily Telegraph ! His economic insights had ,until now, passed me by.

It's France. Of course they shut for lunch. Don't forget that the modern day " poilu" when in the battlefield has a four course meal served twice a day....
